The formal announcement was made at the Melbourne Design Showcase being held at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.   Present at the ceremony were dignitaries from both Hong Kong and Victorian Governments.

The Victorian design sector believes BoDW 2018 provides an exciting opportunity to collaborate with industry and Government through planning, implementation and follow up activities.

The BoDW Advisory Panel will provide direction for a designer engagement strategy to be conducted over the eighteen months leading up to the event.  The panel comprises representatives from the design sector peak bodies, design educators, design researchers and Creative Victoria.

It will meet monthly until the event is held in the first week in December 2018, culminating in a curated exhibition featuring Melbourne design, a short list of Melbourne conference speakers, a gala dinner with a Melbourne theme and networking opportunities for Victorian designers seeking export markets.

In his announcement, Premier Daniel Andrews said;

“Victoria has the best of everything – and now our top and emerging designers from the catwalk, to the digital games and manufacturing industries, will be on display for the world to see.”

In preparation for next year’s event, a Victorian design delegation will attend the 2017 HK BoDW to evaluate this year’s partner Italy and create prospects to increase export markets for Victorian design.

Advisory Panel Co-Chair Jo-Ann Kellock CEO DIA has no doubts about the competitive pressure;

“The bar will be set high in 2017 by Italy.   But we are confident that Melbourne, voted six times as the world’s most liveable city, can make its mark on the global stage in 2018 by demonstrating the role design has played.”

The design sector will be calling on a wide range of design disciplines to showcase a Melbourne theme and as one of its first activities, will undertake a mapping exercise to seek out the new and emerging Victorian designers as well as internationally recognised designers.
